Choosing a Kitten for your Family

A commitment for the animal’s whole life

A kitten who will cheer up the home... and who will grow up! Once the decision has been made to choose a companion, one knows this is a commitment for several years. Choosing him is therefore a matter of thought as much as a matter of heart.

Once you have decided that an animal would be welcome at home, his origin is probably one of the first questions that come up.

House cat or pedigree cat?

A pedigree cat, born of selected individuals by his breeder and well socialized, offers the guarantee of meeting the morphological criteria set out in the breed standard. The same goes for the major features of his character. Therefore, he should become integrated into his new home without any problem. This is sometimes more difficult with a house kitten whose ascendants or environment in his first weeks of life cannot always be known. It will be difficult to assess its future appearance once an adult or the development of his behavior.

The ideal companion

Choosing a pedigree kitten implies wondering about the type of companion one wants. Elegant such as the Abyssinian, all roundness such as the British, imposing and calm such as the Maine Coon...
The different cat breeds offer such diversity that it is worth gathering extensive information. Affiliated clubs are then the right place to get informed and obtain addresses of breeders.

Going to a cat show is an irreplaceable opportunity to discover a large part of these breeds’ diversity and beauty in a single visit and to discuss with the attending breeders. When this is possible, a visit to the location where the kitten was born and started to grow up is highly recommended. This enables you to better know his environment, his socialization conditions, and strengthen your choice.
The kitten’s socialization, which takes place between the 2nd and the 7th week of age is indeed a very important stage in his development. It conditions, to a large extend, his behavior as a future adult since it’s during that period that he learns to perceive as normal the events and situations with which he is confronted.

Male or female?

Females are cuddlier, males more distant… It’s sometimes what’s being heard or even exactly the contrary ! In fact, there is not a cat of one gender that would be more loving if he/she was of the other gender. As a matter of fact, sterilization, strongly recommended unless one wants to practice breeding, considerably reduces behavioral differences between males and females.

Much more than gender choosing, adequate socialization of the kitten is what will guarantee a pleasant relationship between man and cat. Therefore, you should rather define the nature of your desired future companion and guide your choice according to your own lifestyle.
