Did you know ?
Ears are a distinctive characteristic of Continental Toy Spaniels. In the Phalene, they are set much higher than eye level, carried hanging but mobile. They are furnished with wavy hair that can grow very long, giving these dogs a refined appearance. In the Papillion, the ears are set high, with the auricle well open and turned to the side. Whatever the variety, the ears must never point upward like a Spitz type.
These well-appointed dogs, natives of the ancient region of Flanders that extends from Belgium into northern France, are wonderful companions that are very popular. Theu were once the favorites of royal courts, especially the Papillon variety. They are full of energy but naturally distrustful of people they do not know.
Continental Toy Spaniel In a few words :
-
Head
Normally proportionate to the body, lighter and shorter than the large and medium-sized spaniel.
-
Body
Topline neither too short, too arched nor saddled, without being flat. Solid loins that are slightly arched, broad, fairly deep chest.
-
Coat
All colors are acceptable on a white foundation, white dominant on body and legs.
-
Ears
Set rather far back, far enough apart to reveal the slight rounding of the skull.
-
Tail
Set fairly high, rather long, very well feathered, forming an attractive plume.
-
Hair
Abundant, shiny, wavy but not curly, not soft but slightly resistant with silky reflections, no undercoat.
Continental Toy Spaniels are small dogs of normal, harmonious build and long hair that come in two varieties, Phalene and Papillon. These lively, gracious yet robust spaniels carry themselves proudly, moving with elegance and ease. The muzzle is moderately long, but shorter than the skull. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers.
