Did you know ?

?

Head hair is a distinctive feature of Affenpinschers, forming bushy, bristly eyebrows, a ring around the eyes, an imposing beard, a top knot and side whiskers. It should be as hard and straggly as possible. These are essential to the monkey-like expression that gives the breed its name in German, where Affen means ape.

Affenpinschers are small, compact dogs with rough coats and a monkey-like expression. Intrepid, alert, tenacious and faithful, sometimes passionate and quick-tempered, but certainly a family breed.

In southern Germany Affenpinschers are family dogs whose ancestors were depicted in wood carvings by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). The first Affenpinschers were registered in the stud book in 1879. These toy dogs, which were very popular at the beginning of the 20th century, were developed from rough-coated Pinschers. The ring of hair around the head emphasizes the ape-like expression. Colors originally ranged from a solid yellow shade, reddish or grayish-white to dark gray, or grayish black to pure black.Affenpinschers belong to the large family of German dogs that most famously includes Schnauzers. They are the smaller, rarest breed in the family, but also certainly the most original looking. Their gait is relaxed and fluent.
